Car seats and air travel?

Consider the Lilies asked:

I will be taking a plane trip for the first time with my almost 2 year old daughter. She has an enormous convertible car seat (Evenflo Triumph Advance) that we will need to bring with us. What is airline policy with car seats? If it is stowed with the luggage, is it likely to be banged up a bunch? I’m not even sure if it will fit properly in an airplane seat either. Anyone with prior experience here? How did you manage it?

you can gate check it and they will put it under the plane with other luggage. it may get banged up. you never know when you check your luggage. if it doesnt fit on the plane they will make you check it though, especially on those smaller planes

If the car seat is designed for airplane usage, it should say that it is air plane safe on the back or side of the car seat.

Your best bet is to stow it with the luggage. It should be fine. You can put it in a bag if you’d like. I’ve done that several times and never had an issues.

Are you planning on bringing a stroller? That’s probably your best bet. That way, your little one won’t have to do a lot of walking. Also, they will keep the stroller on the plane for you and you’ll get it back as soon as you get off.

Is she going to be flying in her own seat or as a lap rider? If she has her own seat, I’m pretty sure you’d have to actually take it onto the plane with you to use as a restraint for her. Check out the seat to see if it is registered for safe airline travel (Most seats have that labeled on them somewhere near the “install like this” stickers.)

If she’s going to be flying on your lap, I’m not sure if you can actually gate-check the car seat. I know you can with strollers and whatnot, but (from what I understand) that’s because you actually need them until you get on the plane and would be ridiculously inconvenienced by checking them with the rest of the baggage. But, check with your airline to see what their policy is.
